In book one of Hearts of Heroes: After a horrendous break up, shy and curvy Caitriona Douglass works hard to get her life back in order. Her best friend, Sofie, convinces her the best way to do that is to socialize, forcing her out of her solace zone. Cait has always been unsure of her overweight body so when she garners the attention of not one, but two gorgeous firefighters, she is surprised and a little leery of their motives.
Alex and Roman are best friends and roommates—one, soft and easy-going, the other hardened and rough. When Alex forces Roman to attend the company picnic, Roman realizes it may have been the best decision his friend had ever made as the men become entranced by the woman with the full-figure in attendance. Now all they have to do is convince her they are packaged deal.
Will Caitriona risk her battered heart to find true love? Can the firefighters convince the shy, relationship scared beauty that she needs them both to be happy? When the fire starts to hunt them, will anyone survive from being burned?
Lynne: Can you tell us a little about your background and how you started writing?
Rayne: Well, there isn’t much of a background for me really. I am a stay at home momma of three kidlets. One boy and two girls. Handfuls, lol. I love to read. Like…a lot. Lol. I will be the first to tell you I am an addict. I got started writing from my mom. She called me up on day and said she was thinking I should try writing. I recommended her some books is how I believe the convo originally started. She said I have a big imagination and I have read enough to know the basic structures and what not, so I said yeah, I’ll think about it. Then two weeks later BAM the idea for Taming Two Fires filled my brain.
Lynne: Your latest book, Taming Two Fires, released on August 5, 2014. Can you tell us about your main characters and how you got the idea for this book/series?
Rayne: Lol. I was snuggled up with my Hubs on one side and my body pillow on the other and thought…ya know, it would be nice to be cuddled by two guys. There ya go! A ménage was born lol. I started scribbling that idea down…and I say scribbling because I was looking for a pen and found a crayon instead, and went with it! One sentence turned into paragraphs and before I knew it I had names, descriptions, places, and pretty much the whole storyline. My characters are the luscious curvy yet shy Caitriona. After a bad break up she focused on her career as a photographer. Very guy un-knowledgeable. But with the help from her BFF Sofie, she gets to the place she needs to be, to be introduced to the rocking Alex and the tantalizing Roman. Ok, I will admit Roman has a special place in my heart. Oh, don’t get me wrong. Alex is just plain YUM. All boyish and damn what a charmer, but Roman. Mmmmm. Back hair and those piercing light blue eyes, and don’t get me started on his voice. I shivered every time I wrote him saying something. I love to love a book boyfriend…so I ask you this. Is it bad to have your own book characters be your book boyfriends? Cause I be like nuh-huh honey there be no Cait here, but I love her too. Lol. She definitely deserves some sweet in her life. I LOVE the growth for her. It’s not just a good, hot, smexy, love story , but also her growing more in herself and becoming comfortable with her body and realizing she is beautiful.
Lynne: How did you get the idea for this series? How many books do you think will be part of the series?
Rayne: When I was crayon scribbling I KNEW I wanted something fireman, military, or police. Fireman screamed the loudest. Then I decided why stop there. so in my mind there will be a total of five books in this series. : ) book two hits Police. Book three hits military. Book four mismatches with police AND fireman, and book five will be a jump back in the past and do Sofie’s story of her and her husband.
Lynne: If you could meet any author, who would it be and why?
Rayne: There are soooo many great Authors out there it’s hard to say but I thought long and hard (hehe) on it and chose Christine Feehan. LOVE her. I can tell you when the time was I read my first C. F. book. She is a paranormal romance writer. Her book happened to be my first romance book as well lol. She pulls you into this intertwining world where you bleed and pray and cheer with the characters. Tears have run down my face as a vampire had to be killed, because you knew, if he would have held on just for a little while more he would have found his salvation, but he couldn’t, and now he must be destroyed. Her Carpathian series, the shifter series, witches, and mmmm the Ghost Walkers. She’s incredible.
Lynne: Do you have plot your books and write in story order, or do you hop around and sort of wing it?
Rayne: Oh I definitely have a plot. Being someone who is really not organized (you should see my cluttered home) it surprises me that I need structure to write. Lol. when an idea pops, I snatch up my notebook and jot it down. When I am ready for it I make a guide line and all the characters info. But when I am in the zone and typing away sometimes the characters play and my guideline will change. Something takin out, something’s added, but my beginning and end are mapped out and not much will change that. lol
Lynne: What do you find hardest about writing? Easiest? What surprised you most about writing your first book?
Rayne: The hardest for me would have to be the research and mapping everything out. Descriptions, occupations, history, places, work commutes. I am writing a story where my girl goes to Scotland…flights, layovers, travel time, time change, and airline regulations….gah. I just needed a paragraph and needed to do all this to make it plausible. Agitating…yes. Worth it…definitely. The easiest? That would be the sex scenes. I guess I get into them and when I write, it plays in my mind like a movie and I just write what I see happening. That kinda sounded like I watch a lot of porn, lol…..yikes. And yet, pointers are hidden there in all honesty. Lol. yeah…moving on. Surprising about my first book? Would have to be the fact that someone liked it, and that I finished it. Lol.
Lynne: Do you have a specific writing “ritual?” A quiet room, music, a specific food or drink? Is there a certain time of day you are more prolific?
Rayne: I actually do have a ritual. My earphones hooked into my laptop with my techno classical playing (Great beats with a relaxing vibe to it and no words to get you confused and wind up in your work, or getting sidetracked by singing along). A throw blanket by my feet just in case my feet get cold. A nice cold Dr. Pepper for caffeine. And the kids down and into bed (and the hubs). The best time for me to work is about 9-10 p.m. to 5 a.m. It’s quiet and I can immerse myself in the book without worrying about what the one year old is getting into now. It’s a good thing I am a night owl right! Lol.
Lynne: What one word would you use to describe yourself to a complete stranger? Why?
Rayne: That would be Talkative. Because I talk….alot. lol.
Lynne: Do you have any pet peeves? What is your biggest one?
Rayne: Grrr…yes. But only a couple. I have a long patience rope. The biggest one is my husband. I know, I know, but it’s not exactly what you think. He does this pick on me thing. He does something he knows I don’t like to test the waters, then proceeds to do it over….and over…and over. Until I snap at him. And he does this because he likes to get me mad. It’s all for his shits and giggles. Annoying right?!
Lynne: If you were going to be left on a deserted island for an indefinite period of time and could only bring one suitcase, what would you pack?
Rayne: Ummm…..a couple pairs of clothes, matches, purifying water tablets, bug spray, sunblock (I’m Irish), a knife, a small gun with and extra or two cases of bullets, and a magic lamp with genie and three wishes included. Lol.
Lynne: What is your favorite curse word?
Rayne: That would be shit. Shitballs. And I like to use the F word in word extensions. Abso-fuckin-lutely, A-fucking-mazing, like that lol. And Asshat.
Lynne: What is your least favorite curse word?
Rayne: My least would be cunt. I don’t mind it in some contexts but if you call me that… I will cut you. Lol just kidding. In a derogatory way, no good for me. but in a sex scene using it as a noun, I’m ok with.
Lynne: What is your guilty pleasure?
Rayne: The night. Lol, no really. I love the night. My house is asleep. My neighbors are asleep. The moon, stars, night bugs singin’, I can watch and grown up movie, read a book, write, whatever I want. When the moon is full and so bright it casts shadows I like to stay outside and walk or just chill on my porch steps.
Lynne: What is your favorite season? Why?
Rayne: Spring and Fall. I can’t pick just one or the other. Spring is when everything comes back to life, it’s not too hot but not too cold, comfortable, and easy on your utility bill. Fall for the leaves. The color changing. I love taking the kids out and collecting all the different ones we can find and making a big collage. Plus the weather is divine. : )
Lynne: Is there anything else you’d like to share with us today?
Rayne: I want to add a big thank you! Thank you so much for having me today. I want to thank everyone who read this as well! I love hearing from people so anytime you want to comment, email. Even Facebook pm me, it’s all good : ) I had a lot of fun! I would like to give away an e-book of Taming Two Fires today! Just leave a comment about what you thought of the blog and I will pick randomly for my winner! : ) Thank you again!!
We pull into an empty spot in the crowded parking lot, Sofie parks while I get a good look around. Large grassy spaces and playground equipment litter the park with children all shapes and sizes running their little selves ragged and having a blast in front of me. As I watch the kids I grab my camera and climb out of the car. Glancing over to my left, I notice a large green atrium with its roof sparkling under the sun. Inside the house-like structure is a massive spread of food covering the picnic tables and is surrounded by people. Good lord that’s a lot of food! Are they trying to feed an army? Looking around I notice the attire everyone’s wearing and my body relaxes a bit. Looks like I picked appropriate clothing for once. My fingers are itching to snap pictures so I raise my camera. Sofie slings her arm around my shoulders, “It’s quite lovely here, isn’t it? Hold off on the pics for now ‘mkay? Let’s find Rob and eat first, I’m starving. Then I say, snap away, my dear lady photographer, snap away.”
We scan the crowd for the big, burly man who is her husband. Chairs are scattered over the grass, some in circle groups, while others are lined up so parents can watch their little ones. People are everywhere it seems. Sitting, standing, lounging on picnic blankets—here to relax and socialize.
“I had no idea there was this many people going to be here,” I state.
Sofie contemplates her answer as she looks around and gives a shrug. “Well including Rob, there are eight to a team with four to a truck. I think there are three teams at the station.” Listening to her count of people, I see Rob’s buzzed cut head in a group of men off the right side of the atrium holding plastic cups, gabbing away. So I grab Sofie’s arm and gesture toward her husband. “Found him.”
Making our way over to the group, I can hear his booming laughter over the squealing kids. Sofie walks over to her man as I hang back from the group. I’m just not ready yet to be focused on. I really could just stay in the shadows and be good. I hate to be in the spotlight and I’d rather be on the other side of the lens. I see a big smile form on Sofie’s lips as she reaches Rob. Goodness he’s happy to see her too. Chuckling to myself as I watch him grab her up with his massive arms, which looks like he tried stuffing into a red polo shirt and barely succeeded, and squeeze her tightly. Rob leans down and grazes a kiss on Sofie’s lips before releasing her so she can make her round of hellos. Out of the corner of his eye he catches me trying to hide and flashes me a smile.
“There’s my Cait!” he exclaims happily as he grabs me up for my own bear hug.
“Your squeezing the life from me, put me down you Neanderthal!” I wheezily berate him. Chuckling, he releases me into a more gentle hug. I can see the sparkle in his hazel eyes and I know he is genuinely happy I’m here. “It’s good to see you. How’s your new place treating you?”
I can’t help the excitement that burst from me. “It’s great! I love it! It’s just perfect!” Once his question is answered he fully releases me and returns to his full height. This man’s big, like, almost a foot taller than my five foot seven and as wide as a front of a car. Massive. Sofe looks so small smashed against his side, but she seems to fit perfectly under his arm. I want that. Yes, I am afraid of being rejected again, but I so badly want to experience the love and bond like they have.
Rob grabs ahold of me and turns me to the group of friendly looking guys, and starts the introductions. Nodding and shaking hands with the four guys standing around me, I relax with Rob and Sofie beside me.
“Ahh, Alex, just in time, this is Caitriona. She’s a longtime friend of Sofe’s, wanted to get f the house and rock out on the dance floor tonight. Isn’t that right, girlie?” Rob’s deep bass of a voice comes over my shoulder. Face blazing red, I turn toward Rob to give him a piece of my mind. I mean come on! What’s with him?! ‘Caitriona’? He never uses my full name, it’s always ‘Cait’ or ‘girlie’. Something smells rotten to me, and it’s Rob. I turn my body fully to him, my mouth opens to give him a what for, when he interrupts my would-be tirade.
“Caitriona, this is my coworker, Alexander O’Fallon. Oh…I see my wife needs a drink, sorry, guys, excuse us.” Turning and walking away, he pulls a confused looking Sofie alongside him. Her eyes, the size of dinner plates and staring at me, I see her mouth ‘oh my’ before turning away trying to keep up with her long-legged husband.
What the hell just happened, they just abandoned me?!
“Well, that was kinda awkward and obvious all at the same time. I’d apologize for him but I think you already know what he’s like.”
Oh. My. God…my whole body shivers at his voice. It’s like I’ve been dipped in warm, sweet honey. My head slowly turns toward the almost orgasm-inducing voice and my heart drops to the floor. Ok, wow. Breath gone, my eyes rove over his body. Tall, slender build—a runner for sure—his tight t-shirt hides nothing as it forms to his muscular chest and over strong, broad shoulders. Solid, strong chin, pouting kiss-me-now lips, and a straight nose leading to the most beautiful emerald-green eyes I have ever seen, topped with a mass of light brown curls…I can’t breathe, don’t pass out, suck in. mmmm…suck, him…oh, my.
I am pretty sure my mouth is hanging open, but I can’t seem to find enough brain cells to close it. Focus, Cait. Before he just walks away or you pass out. Sucking in a breath of crisp air, I wet my lips and try to say something….um, anything.
“Hi.” Damn! Well that was just great. Look at me, queen of the conversation—not.
“Hi back, I’m Alex and it’s nice to meet you, Caitriona. You’re a friend of Sofie’s?” Chuckling good-naturedly, Alex takes a drink from his cup. Okay, I can do this.
“Just Cait, um, no one calls me by my full name. It’s meet you nice as well….oh! I mean, nice to meet you as well.” Oh way to go, Cait! Seriously… Pull. Yourself. Together. The hot man asked you a question. Blushing furiously, I continue, “Yeah, me and her go way back, like third grade I believe. You and Rob on the same team?”
